How Anger Management Helps Your Clients
ASSAULT CHARGES
N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1 | Most Common Referral Type
SIMPLE ASSAULT (2C:12-1a)
Disorderly Persons Offense – Up to 6 months jail, $1,000 fine. Includes attempts to cause bodily injury, negligently causing injury with a weapon, or physical menacing.
How Anger Management Helps: Often results in conditional dismissal for first offenders or downgrade to disorderly conduct. Completion demonstrates rehabilitation to prosecutor. Recommended: 8-12 week program.
AGGRAVATED ASSAULT (2C:12-1b)
Indictable Offense (2nd-4th Degree) – Causing serious bodily injury, assault with a weapon, assault on protected persons (police, teachers, etc.).
How Anger Management Helps: Critical for PTI acceptance. Prosecutors frequently require 12-16+ weeks. Can support downgrade from 3rd degree to 4th degree, or from indictable to disorderly persons. Recommended: 12-26 week program.
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE OFFENSES
Prevention of Domestic Violence Act | N.J.S.A. 2C:25-17
Domestic violence cases involving current or former spouses, dating partners, or household members trigger special considerations under New Jersey’s Prevention of Domestic Violence Act. While anger management alone cannot resolve DV allegations, it is frequently required as part of comprehensive resolution strategies.
DV-RELATED ASSAULT
Assault between protected persons. Anger management supports plea negotiations and demonstrates commitment to change. 12-20 weeks typical.
DV-RELATED HARASSMENT
Communications or conduct intended to alarm or annoy. Anger management can support conditional discharge or dismissal. 8-12 weeks typical.
DV-RELATED CRIMINAL MISCHIEF
Property damage during domestic disputes. Anger management addresses underlying issues. 8-16 weeks typical.
TRO/FRO VIOLATIONS
Restraining order violations (contempt). Anger management shows court client is addressing behavior. 12-26 weeks for serious violations.
⚠️ Important Note for Attorneys: Domestic violence cases in New Jersey are not eligible for PTI. However, anger management is frequently required as a condition of probation, as part of plea agreements for reduced charges, or as a factor the court considers at sentencing. We provide specialized domestic violence-focused anger management programs that meet court requirements.
HARASSMENT & THREATS
High Success Rate for Diversion Programs
HARASSMENT (2C:33-4)
Petty Disorderly Persons Offense – Communications made with purpose to harass, anonymous communications, repeated acts to alarm or annoy.

TERRORISTIC THREATS (2C:12-3)
3rd Degree Crime – Threatening to commit violence with purpose to terrorize or cause evacuation. Serious charge with potential prison time.
How Anger Management Helps: Can support PTI for first offenders or downgrade to harassment. Prosecutors look favorably on proactive enrollment. Demonstrates client recognizes need for behavioral change. Recommended: 12-16 week program.

Frequently Asked Questions for Attorneys
❓ How quickly can my client begin the anger management program?
Same-day enrollment is available. We offer flexible scheduling including evenings, weekends, and virtual sessions. Clients can begin as early as the next available session after registration. For urgent court dates, we offer accelerated scheduling with multiple sessions per week. We provide immediate enrollment confirmation letters that can be submitted to the court the same day your client registers. Call 201-205-3201 for urgent referrals.
❓ Is your program accepted by all New Jersey courts?
Yes. Our SAMHSA-based curriculum is accepted by all 21 county Superior Courts and all 565 municipal courts in New Jersey. We have established relationships with prosecutors and PTI supervisors in Hudson, Bergen, Essex, Passaic, Union, and Middlesex counties. Our certificates of completion specifically reference SAMHSA compliance, which is the standard courts look for when verifying anger management programs.
❓ How many sessions/weeks does the court typically require?
Requirements vary by charge and jurisdiction. General guidelines: 8 weeks – Municipal court, first-time disorderly persons offenses, harassment, disorderly conduct. 12 weeks – Most common for PTI, simple assault, most domestic violence cases. 16-20 weeks – Aggravated assault, repeat offenders, serious domestic violence. 26 weeks – Court-mandated extended programs, serious criminal history. If you’re unsure what the court requires, call us at 201-205-3201 – we can advise based on the specific charge and court.
❓ Do you provide progress reports and communicate with attorneys?
Yes, attorney communication is a core part of our service. We provide: (1) Immediate enrollment confirmation upon registration (same day), (2) Progress reports at intervals you specify (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly, or upon request), (3) Attendance verification for court appearances, (4) Detailed completion certificates listing dates, hours, curriculum content, and SAMHSA compliance, (5) Direct phone access to our program director for urgent matters. With client authorization, we can communicate directly with prosecutors, PTI supervisors, and probation officers as well.
❓ Can clients attend virtually or do they need to come to your Jersey City office?
Both options are available. We offer in-person sessions at our 121 Newark Avenue, Jersey City location, as well as live virtual telehealth sessions via secure video conferencing. Virtual sessions are accepted by all New Jersey courts and are particularly convenient for clients with work schedules, transportation limitations, or those located further from our office. Both formats use the identical SAMHSA curriculum and result in the same court-accepted certificate.
❓ What does the anger management program actually cover?
Our SAMHSA-based curriculum includes: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques for identifying and changing thought patterns, Trigger identification and early warning sign recognition, De-escalation strategies and conflict resolution skills, Stress management and relaxation techniques, Communication skills including assertiveness training, Empathy development and perspective-taking exercises, Relapse prevention planning and ongoing coping strategies. Each session is 90 minutes and includes lecture, discussion, role-playing, and take-home exercises.
❓ What if my client misses a session?
Life happens, and we understand. Clients can make up missed sessions at our next available session time (we offer multiple sessions per week). We require 24-hour notice for cancellations when possible. If a client has a pattern of missed sessions, we will notify the referring attorney so you can address compliance with your client. For court-mandated participants, we document all absences and make-ups in our records, which are reflected in the final certificate. Our goal is successful completion, and we work with clients to accommodate reasonable scheduling conflicts.
❓ How much does the program cost, and do you offer payment plans?
Program costs vary by length: 8-week program: $400-$600. 12-week program: $600-$800. 16-26 week programs: $800-$1,200. We accept cash, credit cards, and checks. Payment plans are available – clients can pay per session or spread payments across the program duration. We do not let cost be a barrier to enrollment; contact us to discuss options. Some clients have HSA/FSA accounts that cover anger management. We provide detailed receipts that can be submitted for reimbursement where applicable.
❓ Can anger management help with PTI applications for first-time offenders?
Absolutely – this is one of the most common reasons attorneys refer clients to us. Pre-Trial Intervention (PTI) in New Jersey is a diversionary program that, upon successful completion, results in dismissal of charges with no criminal record. For assault, threats, and related charges, prosecutors almost always require anger management as a PTI condition. Proactively enrolling your client BEFORE the PTI application demonstrates to the prosecutor that the client takes responsibility and is committed to rehabilitation. We’ve seen clients accepted into PTI specifically because they had already begun our program before the PTI interview.
❓ Do you serve clients from outside Hudson and Bergen Counties?
Yes, we serve clients statewide and even from out of state. While our physical office is in Jersey City, our virtual program serves clients from all 21 New Jersey counties. We regularly work with attorneys and clients from Essex, Passaic, Union, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, and all other NJ counties. We also serve clients from New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and other states whose courts accept out-of-state anger management completion. Our certificates are recognized nationally.
