Abuse Intervention Programs (AIP)
in Hudson & Essex County, NJ
If you have been ordered to complete an Abuse Intervention Program (AIP) — formerly called a Batterers Intervention Program (BIP) — in Hudson County or Essex County, New Jersey, this page will help you understand what AIP is, where to find a certified provider, and why anger management is a separate requirement that frequently accompanies AIP orders. NJAMG does not provide AIP, but we will help you find it — and we do provide the court-approved anger management that is often ordered alongside it.
ℹ Important: What NJAMG Does and Does Not Provide
NJAMG does NOT provide AIP (Abuse Intervention Programs). AIP is a state-certified domestic violence intervention program that must be delivered by specifically approved providers under the NJ Attorney General’s guidelines. We are not one of those providers and we will never tell you otherwise.
What NJAMG does provide: Court-approved, private one-on-one anger management — which is frequently ordered by NJ courts alongside AIP as a separate requirement. If your court order includes both AIP and anger management, you need to satisfy both independently. NJAMG handles the anger management component.
We will also help you find a certified AIP provider in Hudson County or Essex County. Call us at (201) 205-3201 and we will point you in the right direction — at no charge, no strings attached.
What Is an Abuse Intervention Program (AIP) in New Jersey?
An Abuse Intervention Program — commonly referred to as AIP, and previously known as a Batterers Intervention Program (BIP) — is a structured, state-certified intervention specifically designed for individuals who have been convicted of or charged with domestic violence offenses under the New Jersey Prevention of Domestic Violence Act (N.J.S.A. 2C:25-17 et seq.).
AIP programs in New Jersey are not general counseling or anger management. They are a distinct, court-mandated intervention following a highly specific curriculum developed in accordance with standards set by the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office and the Division on Women. These standards govern who can provide AIP, how it must be delivered, what the curriculum must include, and how completion is documented and reported to the court.
Key Characteristics of NJ AIP Programs
- Specifically designed for domestic violence defendants — not general anger management
- Must be delivered by a provider certified by the NJ Attorney General’s Office
- Typically 24 to 52 weeks in length — significantly longer than most anger management programs
- Conducted in group format at certified program locations
- Focuses on power, control, accountability, and the dynamics of domestic violence
- Progress and completion reported directly to the court and probation
- Completion certificate required for sentencing, probation satisfaction, or FRO proceedings
- Cannot be substituted by anger management, counseling, or any other program
If your court order in Hudson County or Essex County specifies AIP — by name or by referring to a domestic violence intervention program — you must complete a state-certified AIP program. Nothing else satisfies that requirement.
AIP vs. Anger Management — Two Separate Requirements
This is the most important distinction on this entire page. Many people ordered into AIP assume that anger management is the same thing, or that completing one satisfies the other. It does not. These are fundamentally different programs serving different legal purposes — and NJ courts treat them as entirely distinct obligations.
| Feature | AIP / BIP Program | Anger Management (NJAMG) |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Addresses domestic violence dynamics — power, control, accountability in intimate partner relationships | Addresses emotional regulation, trigger awareness, de-escalation, and conflict prevention |
| Who it is for | Defendants convicted of or charged with domestic violence offenses under NJ DVA | Anyone court-ordered into anger management — DV cases, assault, harassment, probation, PTI, proactive |
| Length | Typically 24–52 weeks | Varies — commonly 8–26 sessions depending on court order |
| Format | Group sessions at certified location | ✓ Private one-on-one at NJAMG — in-person, telehealth, or hybrid |
| Provider certification | Must be NJ AG-certified domestic violence program | Court-approved provider — NJAMG accepted by all 21 NJ counties |
| Can substitute for the other? | ✗ AIP does NOT satisfy an anger management order | ✗ Anger management does NOT satisfy an AIP order |
| Can be done concurrently? | ✓ Yes — many courts order both simultaneously. Both can often be completed at the same time. | |
| NJAMG provides? | ✗ No — we refer you to certified AIP providers | ✓ Yes — same-day enrollment, private 1-on-1 |
The bottom line: if your Hudson County or Essex County court order includes both AIP and anger management, you need both — separately. NJAMG handles the anger management component and will help you find the AIP provider.

(201) 205-3201Ordered into Both AIP and Anger Management? Here Is What to Do.
It is increasingly common for Hudson County and Essex County courts to order both AIP and anger management as separate conditions — particularly in cases involving domestic violence charges where the judge wants to address both the specific DV dynamics (AIP) and the broader anger regulation patterns (anger management) simultaneously.
If your order includes both, here is the correct approach:
Read Your Order Carefully
Confirm exactly what is required — how many sessions of each program, the deadline, and whether both can be completed concurrently. Your attorney can help clarify the language if it is ambiguous.
Call NJAMG First
Call us at (201) 205-3201. We will review your requirements, enroll you in anger management the same day if needed, and help you identify the right certified AIP provider in Hudson or Essex County.
Enroll in Anger Management Immediately
NJAMG offers same-day enrollment. Your first anger management session can typically be scheduled within approximately 72 hours. Starting immediately demonstrates good faith to the court.
Find and Enroll in AIP
With our help, locate a certified AIP provider in your area. Enroll as soon as possible — AIP programs are longer (24–52 weeks) and placement can take time. Starting both programs concurrently is common and appropriate.
Keep Your Attorney Informed
Provide your attorney with your NJAMG enrollment letter immediately. This can be presented at your next court date as evidence of proactive compliance — which Hudson and Essex County judges notice.
Complete Both Programs
Complete both programs fully and obtain completion certificates from each. Both documents must be submitted to satisfy your court order and/or probation conditions.

Case Studies — AIP + Anger Management in Hudson & Essex County
Roberto M. — Jersey City, Dual Order: AIP + Anger Management
Roberto was charged with a domestic violence-related simple assault under N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(a) in Jersey City. At sentencing before the Hudson County Superior Court, the judge entered a conditional discharge requiring Roberto to complete both an AIP program and a separate anger management program concurrently within 12 months.
Roberto called NJAMG the day after sentencing. We enrolled him in anger management the same afternoon and helped him identify a certified AIP provider in Jersey City. He attended NJAMG telehealth sessions on Tuesday mornings and his AIP group sessions on Thursday evenings — both progressing simultaneously without conflict.
Marisol T. — Newark, Essex County Family Division — AIP Referral + Anger Management
Marisol was involved in a domestic violence proceeding in Essex County Family Division. Her attorney advised that the court was likely to order both AIP and anger management as conditions of resolving the matter. Before the next court date, Marisol proactively called NJAMG.
We enrolled her in anger management immediately — all sessions conducted in Spanish via telehealth from her Newark apartment. We also helped her attorney identify a certified AIP provider in Newark that had available intake appointments. At the next hearing, Marisol’s attorney presented her NJAMG enrollment letter and confirmed AIP placement was arranged.
David K. — East Orange, Confused About His Court Order
David received a court order from Essex County Superior Court that referenced both “domestic violence intervention” and “anger management.” He was confused about whether these were the same thing or two separate programs. He called several providers who gave him conflicting information — some told him anger management was sufficient for both requirements.
When David called NJAMG, we took time to review the language of his order with him. We explained clearly that the domestic violence intervention requirement was an AIP — which we do not provide — and that the anger management requirement was separate, which we do provide. We helped him understand that he needed both independently and pointed him to a certified AIP provider in Essex County.
