Fundamentals of Anger Management – What You’ll Master

Evidence-Based Core Skills for Lasting Change:

Whether you attend remotely or in-person, you’ll master the same comprehensive anger management fundamentals proven effective through 40+ years of research. These aren’t generic tips – they’re sophisticated psychological techniques that create real behavior change.

FUNDAMENTAL #1: ANGER AWARENESS – Know Your Enemy

Understanding Anger as Secondary Emotion

CRITICAL INSIGHT: Anger is almost always SECONDARY emotion – it masks underlying primary emotions that are harder to express or acknowledge. Underneath anger you’ll almost always find: FEAR (feeling threatened, afraid of loss, anxious about future), HURT (emotional pain from rejection, criticism, betrayal), SHAME (feeling inadequate, embarrassed, disrespected, not good enough), POWERLESSNESS (feeling out of control, helpless, vulnerable).

Example: Man gets angry when wife suggests he’s wrong about something. Surface: Anger at being “attacked.” Underneath: SHAME (feeling inadequate, “stupid,” not respected). If he could express “I feel hurt and inadequate when you correct me” instead of getting angry, communication would transform. But shame is harder to admit than anger is to express.

What You Learn:

  • Identifying YOUR primary emotions underneath anger
  • Building emotional vocabulary to express vulnerable feelings
  • Understanding that expressing primary emotions diffuses anger
  • Practice recognizing “What am I really feeling right now? Fear? Hurt? Shame?”

Identifying Personal Triggers

Everyone has unique anger triggers. Through self-assessment and anger logs, you identify YOURS:

  • External triggers: Being criticized or corrected, Feeling disrespected or dismissed, Being told “no” or controlled, Traffic and delays, Financial stress, Relationship conflicts, Someone raising their voice, Perceived injustice or unfairness
  • Internal triggers: Feeling inadequate or “less than”, Anxiety and fear, Fatigue and hunger (HALT: don’t make big decisions when Hungry, Angry, Lonely, Tired), Physical pain or illness, Feeling powerless

Recognizing Early Warning Signs

Anger doesn’t go from 0 to 100 instantly – there’s escalation process. Learning to recognize YOUR early warning signs allows intervention BEFORE exploding:

  • Physical: Muscle tension (jaw, fists, shoulders), Increased heart rate, Rapid or shallow breathing, Face flushing or feeling hot, Stomach churning, Restlessness or pacing
  • Emotional: Irritability, Frustration, Feeling attacked or persecuted, Sense of urgency or pressure
  • Cognitive: Racing thoughts, Rumination (can’t stop thinking about it), Hostile self-talk, Seeing worst in situation/person
  • Behavioral: Raised voice, Aggressive posture, Slamming objects, Withdrawing or going silent

Anger Scale Concept: Rate anger 1-10. Intervention at level 3 is MUCH easier than at level 8. Once you hit 7-8, physiology takes over and thinking brain shuts down. Goal: Catch anger at 3-4 before it escalates.

[Content continues with remaining fundamentals: Cognitive Restructuring, De-Escalation/Self-Control, Communication Skills, and Conflict Resolution, in same comprehensive style]
